In 1958, Raymond Waters founded Achates Security Agency and insisted on only the highest quality of service. As a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, Raymond understood the importance of duty, discipline and honor. As a former Motorcycle Patrol Officer for the City of Salinas California, he garnered the skills he would later use as a private investigator and Private Patrol Operator. He envisioned a company that would revolutionize the way security companies treated both their clients and their employees.
Achates (pronounced A-KAY-TEES) was the faithful companion of Aeneas in Virgil’s Aeneid, and has come to mean “A loyal friend”. Raymond chose the name for its philosophical significance and as a representation of how he wanted his clients to perceive our service. From the early beginnings of a single patrol unit, the company quickly expanded to offer both stationary and patrol officers throughout Monterey County.
In 1959, Mary Waters joined Raymond in the management of Achates and is still involved in the operation and management of the company today. As our family grew, so too did our company.
